**Part 4: Did Women Have a Revolution?**
👉🏻. **Situation of Women Till Revolution**
* Had to work for a living (Third estate women).
* Worked as seamstresses or laundresses, sold flowers, fruit, and vegetables at the market, and worked as domestic servants in the houses of prosperous people.
* Mostly did not have access to education or job training, except daughters of nobles or wealthier members of the Third Estate, after which they were often married.
* Women took care of their families by cooking, fetching water, queuing up for bread, and looking after children.
* Wages were lower than men's wages.
👉🏻. **Women Revolution**
* Women political clubs and newspapers were set up (about 60) - "the Society of Revolutionary and Republican Women" was the most famous.
* Women were disappointed when the Constitution of 1791 reduced them to passive citizens.
* They demanded equal political rights, the right to vote, and to be elected to the Assembly and hold political office.
👉🏻. **Earlier Benefits Given by the Revolutionary Government**
1. Creation of state schools and schooling was made compulsory for all girls.
2. Could no longer be forced into marriage against their will.
3. Marriage was made a contract which could be entered into freely and registered under civil law.
4. Divorce was made legal and could be applied by both men and women.
5. Could now train for jobs, become artists, or run a business.
👉🏻. Equal political rights were still not given. During the Reign of Terror, the new government issued laws ordering the closure of women's clubs, banning political activities. Prominent women were arrested and executed. The revolution continued, and finally, in 1946, women in France got the right to vote.
