1. Caribbean colonies were important suppliers of commodities such as tobacco, indigo, sugar, and coffee.
2. Martinique, Guadeloupe, and San Domingo were Caribbean colonies.
3. Europeans were reluctant to go and work in distant lands, causing a shortage of labor on the plantations.
4. Thus, a triangular slave trade flourished between Europe, Africa, and the Americas, beginning in the 17th century.
5. French merchants sailed from the ports of Bordeaux or Nantes to African coasts and bought slaves.
6. The branded and shackled slaves were packed tightly into ships for a three-month-long voyage.
7. They were transported across the Atlantic to Caribbean colonies and sold to plantation owners.
8. This fulfilled the growing demand in European markets for sugar, coffee, and indigo.
👉🏻 Criticism of Slavery in France
👉🏻 The National Assembly held long debates about the rights of man in French colonies but did not pass any law due to fear of opposition from businessmen involved in the slave trade.
👉🏻 The Convention - in 1794 - legislated all slaves free.
👉🏻 Napoleon reintroduced slavery but it was finally abolished in 1848.
**Part 6: The Revolution and Everyday Life**
1. Abolition of censorship offered the freedom of speech and expression.
2. Newspapers, pamphlets, books, and printed pictures described and discussed the events taking place in France.
3. Plays, songs, and festive processions were a method to identify people with the ideas of liberty, justice, etc.
**Conclusion**
1. 1804 - Napoleon Bonaparte crowned himself Emperor of France.
2. Set out to conquer neighboring countries, placed members of his family in his kingdoms.
3. Saw himself as modernizer of Europe.
4. People saw him as liberator, would bring freedom for the people.
5. Soon came to be known as an invading force.
6. Defeated at Waterloo in 1815.
7. The ideas of liberty and democratic rights were the most important legacy of the French Revolution.
